Superfoods are naturally nutritionally-dense, and play a very important role in my diet. They have a very beneficial effect on my health and on my daily quality of life.
Superfoods contain lots of different nutrients including:
Antioxidants – these help my body to cleanse itself of unhealthy things like pollution, bacteria, stress and not-so-good food choices. Yes, sometimes I eat fast-food too! A good example of an antioxidant superfood is blackberries.
Probiotics – present in some superfoods, probiotics help my digestive system to work better and stay regular. Kefir is my preferred superfood for this.
Natural stimulants – if you need more energy, natural stimulants can help. They also help with mental focus and concentration. Maca is good for this.
Immune system support – some superfoods contain immune boosting properties that make my immune system stronger so it reacts more quickly to things that might make me sick. As a result, I haven’t had a cold or flu for a whole year. One of my favorite immune supporting superfoods is ginger.
Getting whole superfoods is not easy, can be expensive and it’s hard to know if the source is non-GMO or organic certified. I’ve tried and believe me, you’ve to go to a lot of different grocery stores to track down a good and varied supply of whole superfoods.
Saying that, I still prepare many of my homemade meals using superfoods because I believe eating whole superfoods is the most natural way to enjoy the benefits.
But, to combine all their super properties you need a broad variety of superfoods and that’s very hard to get. This problem is what led me to superfoods in powder form.
High quality Superfood powder contains a complete selection of superfoods from very good sources and is made with the highest of standards. It’s a very good alternative to whole superfoods.
So how did I choose my favorite superfood powder ?
There are lots of different brands on the market so before buying a product I always take some time to discover more about the company’s reputation and what other customers say about their products.
After that I usually pick several products and give them a try.
These are the superfood powders I prefer and recommend to my friends. For each one, I’ve included my thoughts and reviews, and the reason why these are, in my opinion, the best superfood powders around.
1. Amazing Grass Green SuperFood Original
Created by Amazing Grass, probably the most known company for super greens powder, SuperFood Original is their bestselling product. Available at official site.
It’s Vegan, non-GMO, Gluten Free, and 100% Organic as certified by CCOF.
The 8.5 Oz (240 grams) contains 30 servings, costing $29.99, being $0,96 each serving.
Considerations
Almost every day I drink a smoothie for breakfast and in November I started adding one scoop of superfood powder.
When I started, 5th of November, I only drank my superfood smoothie three-times per week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This gave my body time to get used to it gradually and reduced the chances of upset stomach. The first two times I used it I got a little gas, but then I was fine.
Taste and Texture
The taste is not too good, but not that bad either; it’s just quite plain.
Remember, superfood powders are made for health reasons – it’s not a dessert!
Each serving contains many fruits and vegetables mixed all together and blended into a powder. It doesn’t contain any sugar or sweetener so don’t expect it to taste great.
The texture is slightly gritty but way less grainy than other superfood powders I’ve tried. However, you can still add it to smoothie, fruit juice, or soup. I’ll share my recipes in the next section.
This superfood powder contains many organic certified green foods (like Spirulina, Spinach, Chlorella, Broccoli, Alfalfa and more), delivering lots of nutrients and vitamins with very few calories, only 30 per serving.
So you can’t expect a tasty flavor, but you can mix it with your favorite smoothie and I got used to the flavor after just seven days.
If you prefer a better tasting superfood powder, you can try berry or chocolate. If you like Stevia, although I’m not a fan, you can add a few drops but remember to get a very good one.
He says that “It’s expensive but the purest available on the market”
How I drink it?
I’ve read on the internet that some people drink their superfood powder mixed only with water but, honestly, I can’t!
I had to find other easy and quick ways to have my superfood drink in the morning, when I don’t have much time. I prefer and recommend you to drink it in the morning as it contains natural energizers like Açai and Raw Maca but it doesn’t contain caffeine.
1 Cup of Quick Morning Superfood Juice
1/3 cup of 100% natural orange juice/organic apple juice
2/3 cup of water
1 scoop of Amazing Grass Green SuperFood
Alternatively, if you are not used to unsweet drinks, and you need some sugar in it, you can try this recipe
1 Cup of Sweet Superfood Shake
1 cup of milk
1 banana
1 tsp of organic honey
1 scoop of Amazing Grass Green SuperFood

You can always add your scoop to your favorite Protein Shakes, Fruit Smoothies, Strawberry Smoothies and Yogurt Smoothies.
If you still find the taste too strong, you can use half scoop of powder in these superfood drinks.
Personal Notes
Remember: You need to use superfood powder a few times to get used to the taste and you may need more time if you’re used to drinking sweet drinks with high doses of sugar, like sodas, processed juices, coffee/tea with sugar.
Don’t mix superfood powder with any hot liquid as heat speeds up the chemical reactions involved in degradation of sensitive vitamins, compromising the nutrients and vitamins of your superfood drink.
Once you open the container, place it in the fridge for maximum freshness.
Price
A serving is $0,96, so less than a dollar. In my opinion, it does a very good job to at cleansing your body, strengthening your immune system and delivering a high number of vitamins and nutrients. So yes, in my opinion, what you get is totally worth the money.
Results
This was the first time I used superfood powder drinks so my body was not used it. You need to allow time for the cleanse and then, after, you will start feeling the benefits.
These are my experiences and results:
First 2 days
- Got some gas and bloating, but that stopped after two days. This is quite normal for new superfood powder users. You’ve suddenly added a lot more greens to your diet which can cause digesting problems.
The easy way to fix this is to reduce the number of superfood drinks. Instead of a superfood drink every day, have one every other day to get used to the new healthy diet. Or, you can reduce the quantity of superfood powder you add to your juice or smoothie; instead of one scoop add only half a scoop.
After 5-6 days
- Skin: the first signs superfood powder was doing me good was my skin. It started feeling softer, and looking clearer, brighter and healthier.
After 10 days:
- More energy and focus: my common end of the day headaches started to disappear and I felt “lighter” with energy to spare for daily tasks and also felt more focused while working.
- Digestion: It really helps my digestive system and I’m going to the bathroom more regularly.
After 14 days:
- Less hungry and fewer sugar cravings: The superfoods included in the Amazing Grass Green Flood Blend helps to suppress appetite and the fiber and Probiotics helps to reduce sugar cravings
After 18 days:
- Immune system: Every winter, in some point, I usually feel weak and I get a cold or a flu, especially after Christmas time and during early January. This winter, although sometimes I felt like I was getting the first flu or cold symptoms, I continued to drink my superfood smoothie (with a scoop of this powder) and, after a good night’s sleep, the next day I was better. I do feel my immune system is stronger and recovers far better than before.
Conclusion
Superfoods play a very important role in your body. They help your digestive system process and absorb vitamins and nutrients more efficiently and make your immune system stronger which can help reduce diseases.
The antioxidants present in superfoods help your body to remove toxins and other potentially damaging agents from our organism.
The vitamins and nutrients in superfoods help naturally boost energy and focus making work and other complex daily tasks easier.
Whole superfoods are hard to find, expensive and a lot of times it’s impossible to know their sources and especially if they are organic.
I love to include whole superfoods in my meals and smoothies but it’s impossible for me to always have superfoods at home. That’s why I decided to start using Green SuperFood Original by Amazing Grass.
The taste is not so good, but the nutrients, vitamins, probiotics, antioxidant and fiber content makes it totally worth the time, effort and money. After seven days you’ll get used to the taste.
So, yes I’m happy that I started drinking superfood drinks because today my skin is healthier, my immune is system stronger and my digestive system works like a clock.
Available at Official site.
2. Naturo Sciences Natural Greens
Made by Naturo Sciences, a very well-known nutritional supplements company, this green superfood powder has a very high Amazon.com rating and excellent reviews.
Containing raw superfoods, fiber, antioxidant and probiotics, it’s gluten-free and vegan approved.
All ingredients are from the USA, but the formula does not contain organic ingredients and no non-GMO certification.
It costs $19,97 for 30 servings, $0,67 each serving.
Does not contain any caffeine or sugar.
My Experience
The first time I tried this product I mixed it only with water and, again, I couldn’t drink it. But that was something I was already expecting as superfood powders don’t usually have a good taste.
So I tried mixed with 100% natural orange juice, and when I tried it I discovered a strong fake sweet taste. At first I couldn’t understand why this was the case but then I’ve found Stevia on the ingredients list. That was a surprise.
Taste and Texture
I didn’t like the taste, but I was already expecting that which is why I use orange/apple/carrot juice, or mix it in my smoothies.
The formula contains Stevia, which leaves you with a strong sweet taste. I’m not a fan of Stevia, and since I mix my superfood powder with other things, I don’t see the point of adding Stevia to the product. However, I know other people will like the sweet taste and so it may work for other people.
Price
This is the cheapest, costing only $0,67.
Conclusion
All the ingredients listed are from USA, but not organic. This is a cheap superfood powder with high Amazon.com customers rating.
It didn’t work for me due to the ingredients not having organic or non-GMO certification, but that may not be a problem for you.
If you have no problems with Stevia and are looking to save some money, this might be a good option for you. Available at Amazon.com.
What’s the Best Superfood Powder for You ?
My personal recommendation is Green SuperFood Original by Amazing Grass. Their formula it’s Organic and Non-GMO Certified. Available at Amazing Grass Official Site.
It does not taste that good but you can add it to your orange/apple/carrot juice or to your favorite smoothie which makes it more pleasant to drink.
No need to add Stevia or sugar.
Costing less than a dollar each serving, this product is worth the money because of all the results I’ve experienced.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option and are not concerned about non-organic and non-GMO ingredients, I recommend you the Natural Greens by Naturo Sciences, available at Amazon.com.
Questions and Answers
- Isn’t it better to eat better whole foods instead of superfood powder?
-
Answer: Superfood powder is a very concentrated source of nutrients – much more concentrated than any food you can eat. It’s got literally dozens of healthy foods condensed into one single, easy to consume serving, making it very convenient.
While whole foods should always be your first choice, if you want to supercharge your diet, superfoods can really help.
You can read more about superfood powders in my article Why superfoods in powder.
- Can I have superfood powder during pregnancy?
-
Answer: Superfood powders are very healthy and packed with dozens of beneficial ingredients. There are lots of different formulations around, and each one is slightly different. Because of this, it would be unwise of me to say yes, you can use superfood powder during your pregnancy because it depends on what is in your chosen product. Some contain herbs that may be contraindicated to your pregnancy, while others may contain too much of one or another vitamin or mineral that may be harmful.
I strongly suggest you speak to your doctor or OBGYN and show them the product you are thinking of taking. They will then be able to tell you if it is suitable or not.
- Are there any side-effects to drinking superfood powder?
-
Answer: Superfood powders are concentrated sources of nutrients and, as such, are very good for you. But, because most people do not consume enough of these nutrients, increasing their intake by using a superfood powder can cause a few initial side effects until you get used to it. That’s why I recommend introducing superfood powders gradually to your diet. Those side effects include:
- Gas and bloating
- Upset stomach
- Headaches
Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and start off using the lowest superfood powder dose. Increase the amount you take gradually over several weeks to avoid any unwanted side effects. If you experience any side effects, just reduce your dose until they disappear.

- Do you have any recipes that use superfood powder?
-
Answer: Superfood powders can be mixed with water and drunk as they are but, in my honest opinion, that can mean they taste NASTY! And if you don’t like the taste, you are probably going to skip taking your supplement as often as you should.
To help make superfood powders more palatable, I’ve created some recipes for the readers of Days to Fitness. Check out my page superfood recipes for more information.
- Do you need a blender to mix superfood powder?
-
Answer: Most superfood powders can be mixed using nothing more than a glass of water and a teaspoon or a shaker cup. Because they don’t really dissolve in water, it’s just a case of agitating the water enough that the powder distributes evenly through the liquid. If you leave the powder for more than a minute or two, it will just sink to the bottom of your glass.
If you are making a superfood smoothie, I recommend using a blender to thoroughly mix all the ingredients, but if you are just using superfood powder on its own, just add it to water and stir or shake.
- Is superfood powder effective to lose weight?
-
Answer: Superfood powders can HELP you lose weight but are not a weight loss supplement. They are low in calories, improve your health, boost your metabolism, and can help relieve cravings but, other than that, they are not meant for weight loss.
That being said, the healthier you are, the better your body is at burning fat, so I have no hesitation in recommending that you add superfood powders to your weight loss diet.
Check out Superfoods and weight loss for more information on this topic.
- How many times per week should you use superfood powder?
-
Answer: The answer to this question depends on the manufacturer’s recommendation, and that is based on how concentrated the product is. Some say you should use them every day while others recommend that you use them several times a week.
In my experience and opinion, most work best when used at least three times a week, on alternating days. But, if you are new to superfood powders, once or twice a week might be all you can tolerate and using them more often could leave you bloated. This is a topic I discuss in my article Gas and bloating after drinking a superfood drink.
- Can I add superfood powder to my fruit smoothies?
- Answer: I think adding superfood powder to your fruit smoothies is an excellent idea. Adding superfoods increases the nutrient content of your meal-in-a-glass, making them even more healthy! In fact, I’m so convinced this is a good idea, I have published some superfood powder drink recipes that involve exactly this idea.
- Did you feel bloated when you started drinking superfood drinks?
-
Answer: I’ve been using superfood powders for quite a long time now. I’ve really enjoyed the benefits they add to my diet and how healthy I feel. But, when I first started using them, I did feel bloated, had a few headaches, and also suffered some uncomfortable gas too. I did some research and discovered that this was common and caused by using too much superfood powder too soon.
As a result, I always recommend that new users of superfood powders start off with a smaller dose and take it less frequently than recommended e.g. once or twice a week instead of everyday. Then, as you get used to it, you can start taking more until, after several weeks, you reach the amount recommended by the manufacturer.

Hi. Don’t know how old this review is, but I have found the Amazing Grass Green SuperFood Original product on Amazon (my favorite place to shop!) for $20.95 for the 8.5oz/30 serving size–with PRIME delivery. That is 70cents/serving! I am ordering to give it a try, trusting your review. Hopefully my morning IdealShape smoothie will disguise the taste!! LOL! -db
So, 10 days later: Just want to say that I took your advise of starting slow to reduce possible ‘side effects’. I put it in my morning IdealShape smoothie–I used it everyday, but only used 1/2 scoop. Did not notice any taste, or ‘side effects’. Hurray!!!
Today, 4/22/17, I started with a whole scoop this morning. It’s been about 5hrs since my smoothie drink, without noticing anything different–again, Hurray!
BTW, my smoothie is a double: 1 cup nonfat milk, 1 cup bottle spring water (COLD!!), and 2 scoops of whatever powder I am in the mood for, or a mix of 2. One of my favs is a scoop of Mocha, and a scoop of Chocolate. So, for just over 300 calories, I am full all morning, often longer, and am getting good nutrition PLUS 2 cups of fluids!! That’s a win-win. -db
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for your comment and your feedback. Slow and steady wins the race. Like you did, I always prefer to start easy and slow and let my body easily adapt to the change as I know, from experience, going slowly and gentle is the way to stick with a diet, a program or any method to create a new habit in my daily life. All the luck with your journey. Have a great day.
