If you have read my article “10 Superfoods Good for You”, you’ll already know that these nutritional powerhouses are very good for your health. Many superfoods have been scientifically proven to fight disease and keep you healthy which is probably the biggest reason that many people use them.
But, if that wasn’t a good enough reason for eating superfoods, they can also help you lose weight. How? Let me tell you!
Naturally low in calories
Superfoods are very low in calories – avocados and coconut oil probably being the two main exceptions. Some, such as spirulina and bee pollen, are virtually calorie-free. Not only are they low in calories, they are also free from sugar. As you will already know, sugar will cause weight gain and is also bad for your health so anytime you can cut sugar from your diet, you’ll find weight loss much easier.
Improve your health
Burning fat is a complicated metabolic process and like any process that happens in your body, it will happen far more easily and efficiently if you are healthy. Superfoods are known for their ability to boost health and fight disease. The healthier your body is, the more fat it will be able to burn.
In many ways, your body is like a car engine. A properly-fueled and well-tuned engine will work better than one that needs a service and who’s fuel tank is full of dirty gas. Your body is the same. If you want to maximize fat burning and weight loss, you need to be healthy and one way to boost your health is by consuming superfoods.
Boost your metabolism
Some superfoods can actually increase your metabolism or otherwise optimize your body for better fat burning. Cinnamon can help control your blood glucose levels while chili will heat you up so you burn more calories even while you sleep. While these effects are very small, I know that any extra fat-burning benefit is worth having.
Relieving Cravings
Cravings are often caused by nutritional deficiencies. For example, a craving for sugar could indicate a deficiency in vitamin C as your body knows that vitamin C is in fruit and fruit is sweet. The trouble is, your brain thinks all sugar is the same which is why you end up reaching for a Snickers when it really wants an orange!
Cravings can strike any time – even if you aren’t hungry. You might be able to use your willpower to ignore the occasional craving but, in many instances, those cravings are irresistible and will make you break your diet, “Reduce Cravings Between Meals and Lose Weight”.
Superfoods can help alleviate nutritional deficiencies which can help reduce cravings. That means you’ll be in much better control of your appetite and food choices which will lead to less overeating – all because you ate some superfoods.
Increased Dietary Awareness
If you are including superfoods in your diet, you are already more aware of what you eat than most people. The vast majority of people just eat whatever food is convenient with no real thought of how that food will affect them.
If you have an interest in superfoods, you’ll also have an interest in healthy eating too and are more likely to stop and think about what you eat. This will lead to better food choices, less overeating, and easier weight management.
Start your day with superfoods to make sure the first thing you think about is healthy eating. This increases the likelihood that you will continue to eat healthily for the rest of the day.
Conclusion
You can’t rely solely on superfoods to lose weight but it’s undeniable that they can help. Make sure you include superfoods in your already healthy meals and snacks to lose weight faster.
