When looking for eating tips to help you make healthy decisions for yourself and your little one, it is best to check with your doctor and see what they think you can do to ensure your baby is getting all the right nutrition. Cravings can be the hardest thing to deal with throughout making healthy choices and it is good to remember that small slip ups are going to happen. First, get rid of all the junk food in your home. If you don’t see it, you are less likely to reach for it. In some cases women who choose to go the healthier route during their pregnancy will send their husband to hide the junk food somewhere else to ensure they cannot find it and allow the father to be to enjoy his junk food while not in sight. Some men even offer to participate in the healthy changes to make it easier on the mother to be.
Another wonderful tip is meal planning. If you can create a meal plan based around your healthier cravings you can easily spread it across the week and allow you to enjoy the satisfaction of fulfilling these cravings. After a while of eating all healthy foods, you will likely begin to crave foods that are much better choices and even turn away from junk food all together. Occasionally you may end up sending Daddy to be to the store for some ice cream, chips, or even a soda, but remember that moderation, and motivation, is the key to healthy choices and a little won’t hurt.
Eating Healthy Ideas
Pregnancy is rough with all of the food restrictions that are involved, however there are many other delicious options out there that don’t contain fish and other restrictions. You can check with your doctor, but tuna is a great food when pregnant as it has many vitamins and minerals that your baby needs to grow healthy and strong. Chicken is also a very flexible ingredient and can be used in just about any recipe that you can think up. Pork and Beef also have lots of proteins and are easy enough to make without having to stress over what recipe you choose to use. Everyone loves veggies and fruits, so why not do salads one night a week and remember to enjoy them for snacks and other meals too. Paleo diet is highly recommended, check our guide here.
Things to Avoid
While junk foods are certainly high on your list if you are making healthy eating changes, you should also avoid anything with empty calories as well as excessive fats. When cooking, try to use olive oil and real butter and avoid margarine and vegetable oils. You could also consider steaming foods rather than frying, especially vegetables as frying and boiling tends to remove many of the good nutrients. Baking foods is also another way to ensure you are getting as many nutrients as possible, this is not only better for you but great for your baby.
